The Experiment

I've built websites the old-fashioned way for years. HTML, CSS, some PHP when I was feeling spicy. I'm a filmmaker and content creator by trade, not a developer — but like most solo creators, I've had to learn enough web development to keep my projects alive. Last week, I decided to test every major AI website builder to see if they could genuinely replace the manual process. The answer: yes and no. But the "yes" part is bigger than I expected.

The Tools I Tested

I tried five AI website builders that are currently leading the market:

  • Bolt.new: Full-stack web app generation from a single prompt. Uses AI to write React/Next.js code and deploys instantly.
  • v0 by Vercel: Component-level AI generation. You describe a UI element and it builds it with shadcn/ui components.
  • Lovable (formerly GPT Engineer): AI that generates entire applications from natural language descriptions.
  • Framer AI: AI-powered website builder with a visual editor. More design-focused than code-focused.
  • Hostinger AI Website Builder: Traditional hosting company's AI builder. Most accessible for non-technical users.

Each one got the same challenge: build a portfolio website for a production company (mine) with a project gallery, about page, contact form, and responsive design. Ten minutes per tool. No code editing allowed.

What Actually Works

Speed Is the Real Story

Every single tool produced a functional website in under 10 minutes. Not a skeleton — a real, styled, responsive page with navigation, sections, placeholder content, and basic functionality. Building the same thing manually would take me at least 6-8 hours.

Bolt.new was the fastest: a complete Next.js application in about 4 minutes. It generated the routing, the components, the styling, and even a basic data structure for projects. I was stunned.

Design Quality Has Crossed the Threshold

The designs aren't just "not terrible" — they're genuinely professional. Clean typography, proper spacing, responsive layouts that actually work on mobile. Framer AI produced the most visually polished result, with animations and transitions that felt intentional rather than random.

This is the crossing point that matters. When AI design goes from "obviously AI-generated" to "I'd hire someone who showed me this in their portfolio," the market shifts. We're there now.

Iteration Speed Changes the Game

Want to change the color scheme? Type it. Add a testimonials section? Describe it. Swap the hero image layout from centered to split-screen? Done in 30 seconds. This is where AI builders crush traditional development. The feedback loop between "I want this" and "here it is" shrinks from hours to seconds.

For someone like me who thinks visually and works fast, this feels natural. I direct the AI the same way I'd direct a camera operator: "move this here, make that bigger, change the mood."

What Doesn't Work

Custom Functionality Hits a Wall

I needed a specific feature: a project gallery that filters by category and opens a lightbox with video playback. Simple enough for a developer. Every AI builder either couldn't do it or produced something buggy that required manual code fixes.

The pattern is consistent: AI builders excel at common patterns (hero sections, feature grids, contact forms) and struggle with anything custom. If your website follows a standard template, you're golden. If you need unique functionality, you'll still need to write code.

SEO Is an Afterthought

Not a single AI builder I tested generated proper meta descriptions, structured data, image alt tags, or semantic HTML by default. These aren't nice-to-haves — they're essential for search visibility. If you're building a site that needs to rank, you'll spend significant time optimizing what the AI produces.

This is a major blind spot. An AI that builds a beautiful website nobody can find is solving the wrong problem.

Brand Consistency Requires Heavy Editing

AI doesn't know your brand guidelines. It doesn't know your specific shade of orange, your preferred typeface, your photographic style, or the tone of voice that took you years to develop. Every AI-generated site I tested needed substantial tweaking to feel like "my" brand rather than a generic template.

For freelancers and small businesses building their first site, this isn't a problem. For established brands with defined identities, it's a significant limitation.

Content Quality Is Generic

The AI-generated copy was technically fine but creatively dead. Headlines like "We Create Amazing Experiences" and "Our Expert Team Delivers Results." Every cliché in the book. For a production company like mine — where personality and voice are core differentiators — this copy would need to be completely rewritten.

Practical Comparisons

Here's how the five tools ranked for my specific use case:

  • Best overall: Bolt.new — Fastest generation, most flexible code output, easiest to customize after initial generation.
  • Best design: Framer AI — Most polished visual output, best animations, most design-forward results.
  • Best for beginners: Hostinger AI — Simplest interface, most guided process, lowest technical barrier.
  • Best for developers: v0 by Vercel — Component-level control, clean code output, best for building blocks rather than complete sites.
  • Most ambitious: Lovable — Tries to build full applications, sometimes succeeds spectacularly, sometimes fails dramatically.

Use Cases Where AI Builders Already Win

  • Landing pages: One-page sites for products, events, or campaigns. AI builders produce these faster and cheaper than any alternative.
  • MVPs: If you're testing a business idea and need a functional site in a day, this is the move. Don't spend $5,000 on a developer for something that might not work.
  • Portfolios: Clean, visual portfolio sites for creatives. The design quality is good enough and the speed is unbeatable.
  • Event sites: Temporary sites for conferences, launches, or campaigns where speed matters more than perfection.
  • Client mockups: Generate a functional prototype in minutes to show a client what you're thinking. This alone justifies the subscription.

Recommendations

For my Open Your AIs site — a content-heavy platform with custom components, SEO requirements, and specific brand identity — I still needed Cursor and manual development. The AI builders couldn't handle the complexity.

But for 80% of websites that small businesses, freelancers, and creators need? AI builders are now a legitimate option. Not a compromise. A genuine, practical choice that saves time and money without sacrificing quality.

My recommendation: use an AI builder for the initial structure and design. Then bring in human judgment for SEO optimization, brand consistency, custom functionality, and content quality. The hybrid approach — AI for speed, humans for taste — produces the best results.

Rating: 7.5/10 — Ready for mainstream use. Great for simple sites and rapid prototyping. Still needs human involvement for anything requiring brand identity, SEO, or custom functionality.
